Regional Police are asking drivers to use extra caution as students in the Cape Breton Victoria-Regional School Board return to school, today.
Police are also reminding people to pay special attention to school zone speed limits.
In areas where the speed limit is 50 km/hr, the speed limit in school zones goes down to 30 when children are within 30 metres of the road.
In areas where the speed limit is more than 50 km/hr, drivers have to slow down to 50 in school zones.
Speed fines double in school zones, starting at $352.50 for a first offence.
Police say drivers should also pay attention around crosswalks and follow the directions of school crossing guards.
They add vehicles coming in both directions must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing.
