MacSween Pledges Lower Tax Burden

Rankin MacSween says he’ll reduce the tax burden in the CBRM by 10% if he’s elected Mayor.

At a campaign event in Glace Bay today, MacSween said CBRM residents desperately need a tax break.

MacSween has pledged to cut property taxes in the CBRM by two and a half percent a year in each of the next four years, something he says will save municipal taxpayers a total of 10 million dollars.

MacSween also took aim at Regional Council today, saying it’s increased total municipal operating expenditures by six and a half percent over the past four years, despite a shrinking population.

MacSween said tax cuts are possible in part because rising property assessments are amounting to more revenue every year.

He also said there would be no targeted cuts to municipal departments.

So far, MacSween is the only person to formally enter the race to take on incumbent Mayor Cecil Clarke in the municipal election on October 15th.
