CUPE To Hold Info Pickets, Today

The Canadian Union of Public Employees plans to hold information pickets in front of the offices of Cape Breton Liberal MLA’s today.

At issue is budget cuts affecting nursing homes.

CUPE says workers got layoff notices or reduced hours at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home last week.

The union blames the move on 6.7 million dollars in provincial budget cuts to long-term care.

CUPE also says more staffing reductions are expected at other nursing homes in the province.

Today’s pickets will take place in front of the offices of Glace Bay MLA and Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan, Victoria-The Lakes MLA Pam Eyking and Cape Breton Centre MLA Dave Wilton.

Other pickets will be happening in Louisdale, Port Hawkesbury and Halifax.
