Fundraising Challenge For Stone Church Society

The group trying to save St. Alphonsus church in Victoria Mines says someone has come forward with a fundraising challenge, today.

The Stone Church Restoration Society is 5-thousand dollars short of its 40-thousand dollar goal to buy the property.

However it says the Diocese of Antigonish has given it an extension on the July 31st deadline.

Society spokesperson Melanie Sampson says a 47 year-old Edmonton woman has offered to match all donations up to 470 dollars as she celebrates her birthday today.

All donations pledged up to midnight tonight will be matched.

Sampson adds they got a donation of a thousand dollars over the weekend.

The group hopes to convert the century-old church into a non-denominational wedding chapel and tourist attraction.
