By-Election in Halifax Needham on August 30

Nova Scotia premier Stephen McNeil has announced a by-election will be held in the constituency of Halifax Needham will be held on August 30.

The riding was held by former NDP MLA Maureen MacDonald since 1999. She left politics in April.

Elections Nova Scotia says only Dr. Rod Wilson, executive director of the North End Community Health Centre, has registered to run. Wilson will run for the Liberals.

The NDP announced earlier this month that Lisa Roberts, executive director of Veith House, will attempt to keep the seat for the New Democrats.

The Tories also announced last week that former RCMP inspector and business owner Andy Arsenault will run for them.

The premier’s decision to run a by-election makes a fall election less likely.

But if a general election is called it would supersede a by-election.
