Sydney Woman Rescued At Dominion Beach

A Sydney woman is crediting members of the Dominion Volunteer Fire Department for saving her life after a dramatic rescue at Dominion Beach.

Amanda Slaunwhite was using a body board to try to swim out to a boat that was sailing off the beach on Monday evening.

She then decided to turn back, but found she was unable to do so.

She adds she feared for her life as she battled the current for about a half hour.

There were no lifeguards on duty at the time, and a bystander called 911 at about 7:10 Monday evening when they noticed Slaunwhite struggling.

Dominion firefighter Jason Turnbull swam out to Slaunwhite in a rescue suit and was able to get her out of the water with the help of a rope that was being pulled by his some of his colleagues onshore.

Slaunwhite says she’s grateful to her rescuers, and she’s advising people not to go in the water alone.

Turnbull estimates Slaunwhite was about 2,000 feet from shore.
