The Sydney Coal Railway will be blowing train whistles at all crossings in New Waterford today in the wake of an audit that raises safety concerns in the area.
The Railway’s Debbie Young says the Transport Canada study found cars racing through crossings, students walking on the tracks or alongside moving trains.
She goes on to say the study could see the overturning of a bylaw that forbids the blowing of train whistles at New Waterford crossings.
Today, the train whistle will blow in the community as part of Rail Safety Week in Canada.
The Sydney Coal Railway says the whistle will sound at all train crossings in New Waterford between 6:00 this morning and 9:00 tonight.
The Railway is also planning a safety blitz at the community’s King Street crossing from 10:00 to 11:30 tomorrow morning.
