People At Meeting Want Two Middle Schools For The Northside

Elected members of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board were told that the Northside needs two middle schools, last night.

That was the message from the crowd of about 70 at the last public consultation on school closures for the Northside Family of Schools.

In February, a committee looking at options for possible school closures in the area recommended that both Thompson Middle School in North Sydney and Sydney Mines Middle School be closed.

Students from both schools would then go to Dr. T.L. Sullivan Middle School in Bras d’Or.

But at last night’s meeting at Memorial High in Sydney Mines, some members of that committee pointed out that their vote on that option was far from unanimous.

Local school board members Fred Tilley and Jack Toomey also said the Northside needs two middle schools at last night’s meeting.

Final decisions on school closures will be made by the elected board during a public meeting at Riverview High School in Coxheath, a week from today
