Final Report on Fire Services Organizational Review Presented, Today

The final report on a review that looks at the possibility of amalgamating volunteer fire departments in the Regional Municipality will be presented, this morning.

Manitou Consultants from New York State were hired to carry out the review.

They’re scheduled to present their findings during this morning’s Fire and Emergency Services Committee meeting that gets underway at 9:30 at the Civic Centre in Sydney.

The consultants met with local fire departments last December during a visit to Cape Breton.

At the time, project manager Charles Jennings acknowledged that amalgamation of fire departments is controversial and added the idea has to be backed up by sound analysis.

Some of the areas the consultants looked at in the review include establishing standards of service, finding cost savings, and dealing with challenges facing both volunteer and career fire departments.
