Military Search and Rescue Exercise in Sydney Area Starting Today

The Sydney area is one of a number of locations in the Maritimes where a major military search and rescue exercise will be carried out, starting today.

Members of Canadian Forces Base Greenwood in the Annapolis Valley will be using Summerside, P.E.I. as their base for the operation.

The military says two Hercules airplanes and two Cormorant helicopters will be take part in the five day exercise.

It adds the goal is to test the Greenwood unit’s ability to operate from a remote location while carrying out search operations.

It goes on to say the exercise involves simulated rescue scenarios that include flares, boats and live parachute drops inland.

People are being asked to stay away from the training areas in the interest of safety.

The exercise wraps up on Saturday.
