by Cheese-maker Saputo is closing its Sydney plant putting more than a hundred employees out of work.
The Quebec-based company says the Sydney operation will shut down in June with production at the facility moved to its other plants.
The company is also shutting down its plant in Princeville, Quebec in August and its Ottawa Dairy in December.
The Sydney plant was owned by Scotsburn before it sold the operation to Saputo in 2014.
The vice-president of the Unifor local at the Sydney plant, Kevin Perfect says they got the news yesterday when they were called to a meeting with senior Saputo executives.
He adds they were told the plant will close on June 30th because the operation that produces milk, yogurt, cottage cheese and ice-cream mix, isn’t making enough money.
