As expected, the first budget of the Trudeau government delivers major deficit spending in an effort to spur the struggling economy.
The fiscal blueprint promises to double the amount the Conservatives pledged for infrastructure to $120 billion over 10 years.
The money will be mostly used for public transit, water, wastewater management and housing.
The added spending balloons the deficit to $29.4 billion — three times the size of the shortfall the Liberals promised during last fall’s election campaign.
In reacting to the budget, Regional Mayor Cecil Clarke says he’ll be asking the province what the money pledged in the budget means for the CBRM.
He goes on to say the province controls the local roads component of the federal Building Canada Fund.
He adds he hopes the municipality can make some headway on a couple dozen road projects this year.
