by Convicted murderer Thomas Ted Barrett from Glace Bay will be back in court next month to find out how much of his life sentence he’ll have to serve before applying for parole.
Yesterday, the 41 year-old was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Brett Elizabeth McKinnon from Glace Bay.
Her remains were found in woods in the community in 2008, two years after she was reported missing.
In rendering her verdict, Justice Robin Gogan said she determined Barrett strangled McKinnon in retaliation for her stealing drugs from him.
Barrett showed no emotion as the verdict was read but members of McKinnon’s family cried and hugged each other.
It’s expected that at least four family members will file victim impact statements when the case returns to court on April 13 for a decision on Barrett’s parole eligibility.
Barrett also faces a second degree murder charge in the death of 21 year-old Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or.
He and his co-accused, 25 year-old Morgan James MacNeil from Glace Bay are due to stand trial in that case in September.
