by About 350 people gathered at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney yesterday to discuss the future of the rail line in Cape Breton with an important deadline just over a month away.
Genesee and Wyoming can apply to formally abandon the Point Tupper to Sydney section of the track on April 1st although it stopped running trains on the line in December of 2014.
Yesterday’s meeting was sponsored by the community group formed to save the Cape Breton line, the Scotia Rail Development Society
Several members of the society made presentations at the meeting along with Sydney-Whitney Pier Liberal MLA Derek Mombourquette and Regional Mayor Cecil Clarke.
Clarke repeated his argument that rail is crucial to the development of the port of Sydney.
Meanwhile, Society co-chair Patricia Morrison says their work to develop a business case for the rail line is continuing.
She adds their petition to save the line currently has 11,530 signatures.
