Regional Council has decided there will be no special election to fill the council seat left vacant by the death of Northside councillor Charlie Keagan.
Keagan died last month after suffering a stroke.
Councillors made the decision at last night’s meeting based on the recommendation of regional solicitor Demetri Kachafanas.
Municipal elections will take place in October and Kachafanas says a special election is not required because the general election is so close at hand.
Mayor Cecil Clarke says even if a special election was held, the new councillor might only get to sit in on one regular council meeting before the October elections.
Clarke presented Keagan’s council table name plate and the Canadian flag that flew at half mast in his honour to Keagan’s widow, Bernadette, last night.
