Council To Discuss Having Mayor Clarke Fill In As UNSM President

Regional Councillors will discuss a recommendation at their meeting tonight that Mayor Cecil Clarke be nominated to fill in for Councillor Claire Detheridge as president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities.

Last month, Clarke said Detheridge was in a Halifax hospital after suffering a brain bleed.

There’s been no update on her condition, since.

However, Council will also deal with a recommendation to grant an extended absence to Detheridge at tonight’s meeting.

The recommendation that Clarke stand in for Detheridge as UNSM president was passed during an in-camera meeting of Council, last month.

Also on the agenda tonight is a report from Regional Solicitor Demetri Kachafanas on what to do about the council seat left vacant after the death of Northside councillor Charlie Keagan.

Keagan died last month after suffering a stroke but general municipal elections are only eight months away.

Councillors will also be asked tonight to approve a final public hearing on the rezoning of a portion of the former heavy water plant site in Glace Bay as residential.

Tonight’s meeting gets underway at 6:00 this evening at the Civic Centre in Sydney.
