Fight Brewing Over MacDonald Elementary

There’s a fight brewing over the proposed closure of MacDonald Elementary in Dominion after the chair of the local committee on school closures revealed last night that MacDonald is on the chopping block.

About 200 people gathered for a rally of concern at MacDonald Elementary where Glace Bay family of schools options committee chair Melissa McDonald confirmed what many feared.

McDonald says the committee voted 10-9 to close both MacDonald Elementary and Tompkin’s Elementary.

She adds they’re recommending that students from both schools go to a renovated Bridgeport school.

Meanwhile, a march of concern is due to start in front of MacDonald Elementary at 9:00 on Monday morning.

Supporters of MacDonald Elementary are also being urged to pack Monday night’s public meeting for the Glace Bay family of schools where the recommended closure of MacDonald will be officially announced.

That meeting gets underway at 6:30 at Glace Bay High.
