Mount Carmel and St. Agnes Schools Slated For Closure

The school options committee for the New Waterford area is recommending that Mount Carmel and St. Agnes elementary schools be closed.

The committee presented the recommendations at its third and final public meeting at Breton Education Centre, last night.

The recommendations match those made by the Cape Breton-Victoria Board last year when it revealed a list of 19 schools up for possible closure.

School options committee chair Chris Hillier says they’re also recommending that students from Mount Carmel and St. Agnes move to nearby Greenfield Elementary.

The move would make Greenfield the only elementary school in New Waterford with a combined student population of just under 500.

Hillier adds the Mount Carmel and St. Agnes school buildings are so old they really can’t be maintained for much longer.

The committee also wants the closures to be delayed for a full year to allow for the development of a proper transition plan.
