Sydney Rally In Support of Striking Herald Workers, Today

A rally in support of striking Chronicle Herald workers will take place in Sydney, this morning.

The 61 newsroom employees at the newspaper walked of the job, early Saturday morning after contract talks broke down.

The Cape Breton District Labour Council is organizing this morning’s rally that get underway outside the Herald’s office at 500 George Street, starting at 8:00.

The Herald says it wants to reduce wages, lengthen working hours, alter future pension benefits and lay off workers to cope with the economic challenges it’s facing.

Meanwhile, late yesterday, Herald management suspended layoff notices it sent to 18 of the striking workers on Saturday.

A union rep says the Herald’s lawyer says the layoffs will remain suspended until the strike is over or an agreement is reached.

Meanwhile, Herald management says the two sides have agreed to meet again today to continue talks.
