Nova Scotia Power says test burns of Donkin coal will take place soon.
NSP spokesperson, Beverley Ware says samples from the mine will be tested in a specialized coal combustion lab.
She adds the utility will do larger-scale testing if the initial tests prove encouraging.
Ware goes on to say Nova Scotia coal tends to have higher levels of sulphur and that’s why the utility mixes smaller amounts of it with cleaner imported coal.
However, Ware also says that having a local supply of coal reduces the costs involved with shipping in coal by boat.
