An online petition calling for the reopening of the Fleur-de-lis Trail between Louisbourg and Gabarus now has nearly 800 signatures.
Bill Fiander who grew up in Louisbourg launched the petition at change.org.
The road was closed in 1966 to preserve the archeological integrity of the Fortress of Louisbourg historic site that was being restored at that time.
Fiander says reopening the road would be a good strategy to build tourism.
He points to a 2008 survey of 1,700 tourists done for the Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority that shows 60 percent of visitors would use the road.
He goes on to say he understands it would cost about 17 million dollars to re-open the road.
He plans to forward his petition to Cape Breton Canso Liberal MP Rodger Cuzner and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
