Diocese Can Sell Sangaree Island

Families fighting to keep their summer vacation spot on Sangaree Island in the Mira River have lost their legal battle with the Diocese of Antigonish.

A judge has ruled that the Diocese has clear title to the land and can sell it to pay for a settlement for those who were sexually abused by priests.

The island has been used by miners and their families as a summer getaway for decades.

It also hosted a children’s summer camp and other activities associated with the church.

Sydney lawyer Nash Brogan represented 17 people who tried to argue that Sangaree belonged to members of St. Agnes/St. Leonard parish.

As a result of the court ruling, people now have 14 days to remove their belongings from the Island.

It’s now listed for sale with an asking price of $800,000.
