Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan say the cleanup of the MV Miner could be delayed after the discovery of more asbestos than expected as well as diesel fuel on the derelict vessel. MacLellan adds the company doing the cleanup, R.J. MacIsaac Construction from Antigonish, has removed 30 tonnes of asbestos so far when only 6.6 tonnes was expected. He says a significant amount of diesel has also been found although crews are still working to verify the amount. He says the 11.9 million dollar tender for the project was based on the premise there was no diesel on the vessel. MacLellan says the discovery of diesel could increase the chances of federal help on the project because the presence of the fuel is an environmental concern. The Miner has been washed up on Scatarie Island since running aground three years ago after its tow line broke.
