Federal Transport Minister Lisa Rait has confirmed that Ottawa will not be stepping in to help save the railway in Cape Breton. The Whitney Pier native was in Sydney last month for a meeting to discuss abandonment of the line between Point Tupper and Sydney. Yesterday in the House of Commons, the Liberal MP for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking asked Rait what the Conservative government is prepared to do. The Whitney Pier native responded by saying the Province is working with the railway and the federal government is not involved. Railway owners Genesse and Wyoming say the plan to apply to abandon the Cape Breton line next month because they’re losing money on the operation. The province has put together a committee that’s working on ways to save the line. Meanwhile, Eyking says Ottawa should step in to help bridge the Cape Breton line through the next year or so, while the committee does its work.
