by A review released by the provincial Department of Justice shows procedures weren’t followed when Thomas Ted Barrett was stabbed at the Burnside jail.
The 39-year-old Glace Bay man was sent to hospital with more than 40 stab wounds after the June attack.
At the time, police said the suspects were all in one cell and the stabbing happened after Barrett entered the cell.
The review found staff responded “quickly and appropriately” to the incident.
However, it also notes that a standard operating procedure regarding the number of inmates allowed in a cell was not followed.
As a result, supervisors at the facility have been directed to ensure the procedure is “reviewed, enforced and adhered to at all times”.
Barrett faces two counts of second degree murder in the deaths of Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or and Brett Elizabeth MacKinnon from Glace Bay.
