Antigonish Company Wins MV Miner Salvage Bid

An Antigonish company has won the bid to salvage the MV Miner.

The province will pay R.J. MacIsaac Construction 11.9 million dollars to remove the derelict vessel from Scaterie Island.

It was one of seven companies in the running for the job.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan made the  announcement this morning at the Coastal Discovery Centre in Main-à-Dieu.

MacLellan says they’ll consult with local fishermen before any work begins.

He adds he still hopes to speak to federal Transport Minister Lisa Rait about Ottawa sharing some of the cost of the salvage.

The MV Miner has been washed up on Scaterie Island since September of 2011.

It was being hauled to Turkey to be scrapped when its tow line broke in rough seas.

People in the area have long lobbied for the removal of the wreck, saying it’s a threat to navigation and the local fishery.
