Special Meeting of Council, Today

There will be a special meeting of Cape Breton Regional Council, this afternoon. On the agenda is a statement of proposed financial activities from 2014 to 2017. A water capital budget for those years will also be discussed. A review of the Transit Service will be presented by Utilities Manager, Mike MacKeigan and Inspector Robert Walsh will present a school crossing guard study. The meeting comes on the heels of last month’s council meeting where councillors met to discuss ways to deal with a 3.2 million dollar budget shortfall. Councillors went through a list of proposed cuts, including a reduction in the transit service by 200 hours a week and job losses through attrition. Budget deliberations were put on hold to allow CBRM officials to consult with the provincial Department of Municipal Relations. This afternoon’s meeting gets underway at 4:00 at the Civic Centre in Sydney.
