Barrett Soon To Get Lawyer

A Glace Bay man charged in the deaths of two women is close to getting a lawyer.

The news was revealed when 38-year-old Thomas Ted Barrett appeared in court yesterday for a preliminary hearing in the case of Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or.

Barrett and 23-year-old Morgan James MacNeil from Glace Bay are charged with second degree murder in the death of the 21-year-old in May of 2012.

However, the preliminary hearing was adjourned until May 16 after the court was told Barrett’s new lawyer would need time to prepare.

There have now been three attempts to find a lawyer for Barrett, who was arrested in February of last year.

Barrett also made a brief court appearance yesterday on charges of attempted murder, unlawful confinement, assault and uttering a threat.

Police say those charges are related to an incident in July of 2012 in Glace Bay.

Barrett is due back in court on that matter on May 20.

He’s also charged with second degree murder in the 2006 death of 21-year-old Brett Elizabeth McKinnon from Glace Bay.
