Glace Bay Man Gets Trial Adjourned

A Glace Bay man who’s also charged with two counts of second degree murder was granted his request yesterday to get his trial that includes a charge of attempted murder adjourned.

The trial for 38-year-old Thomas Ted Barrett was scheduled to begin on Monday, but Barrett says he needs more time to find a new lawyer after he and his legal counsel parted ways on Monday.

Besides the attempted murder charge, Barrett also faces counts of unlawful confinement, assault, and uttering a death threat in the case.

The offences allegedly occurred in Glace Bay in July of 2012 and involve a female complainant.

Barrett is now due back in court on April 7th to set a new trial date.

He’s also charged with second-degree murder in relation to the deaths of 21-year-old Brett Elizabeth McKinnon from Glace Bay, and 21-year-old Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or.

Preliminary hearings in those cases are scheduled for March, April, May and part of June.

Barrett remains on remand.
