49 Workers Laid Off at Donkin Mine

49 of the 130 workers at the Donkin Mine have been laid off.

Mine owners, Kameron Collieries broke the news to the workers, this morning.

The company says it’s discovered the equipment it uses to mine coal at Donkin is not suitable for the geological formations.

It’s now waiting for regulatory approval for an updated mine plan and new equipment.

The company says it remains committed to the mine and is taking the move to ensure the mine’s future profitability.

The laid off workers will be getting a transition payment equal to about eight weeks of straight time wages.
