37 New COVID Cases In NS; Tougher Restrictions In Halifax Area

The province is putting tougher restrictions in place in the Halifax area as health officials report 37 new cases of COVID-19 today.

Most of the new cases are in the Central Zone.

One is in the Northern Zone and is connected to an exposure in the Central Zone.

Another case was reported in the Western Zone at Northeast Kings Education Centre in Canning, Kings County and the school will be closed for the rest of the week.

New restrictions announced in the Halifax area today include the closing of all restaurants and bars for in-person dining, though take out or delivery will be allowed.

Organized sports, recreational, athletic, arts and cultural activities, and public religious activities are being paused, and the province is now handing out a thousand dollar fine for every person who attends illegal gatherings in the Halifax area.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang says new case numbers are expected to be high for the next week to 10 days as the province tries to get the numbers under control.

Strang is also strongly advising people outside the Halifax region against non-essential travel to the area.
