19 Schools Up For Possible Closure

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has singled out 19 schools for possible closure.

Board members unanimously approved the list last night at their meeting at Sherwood Park Education Centre in Sydney.

The Board says it has to close and consolidate a number of schools in the face of continued declining enrollment.

Schools on the list for possible closure include Bridgeport, Gowrie, John Bernard Croak, MacDonald Elementary School and Tompkins Elementary in the Glace Bay family of schools.

Two schools are on the list in the New Waterford family of schools, Mount Carmel Elementary and St. Agnes Elementary.

On the Northside, Sydney Mines Middle School, Thompson Middle School, Florence Elementary, St. Joseph’s Elementary and Seton Elementary are being considered for closure.

Sherwood Park Education Centre, Whitney Pier Memorial and Mira Road Elementary face potential closure in Sydney.

And in the Riverview family of schools, George D. Lewis School, MacLennan Middle School, East Bay School and Robin Foote Elementary are on the list.

No schools in Victoria County are being considered for closure.

Committees are now being formed in each family of schools as part of the school review process.
