Campers Evacuated From Cheticamp Park

Campers at the Highlands National Park in Cheticamp had to be evacuated, last night.

The evacuation order was issued after heavy rain caused extensive flooding.

Joe O’Connor is the Emergency Management Co-ordinator for Inverness County.

O’Connor says some campers lost their belongings and a couple of vehicles were damaged when the Cheticamp River overflowed but he adds no one was hurt in the incident.

He goes on to say about 50 campers spent the night at the Cheticamp Fire Hall while 15 to 20 travel trailers and motor homes were put at the Cheticamp arena parking lot.

O’Connor says the water has since receded but there’s no word on when the park can reopen.
