150 Pack Meeting on Bringing Syrian Refugees to CB

About 150 people packed the Cedar’s Club in Sydney last night at a meeting that launched the first step in forming a group to bring Syrian refugees to Cape Breton.

The meeting was organized by Terry Smith, who’s set up a Twitter account and a Facebook page for Lifeline Syria CB.

The local group is inspired by Lifeline Syria in Toronto that aims to resettle 1,000 Syrian refugees in the Greater Toronto Area over the next two years.

Smith told the crowd it will probably take a year to resettle refugees in Cape Breton despite Ottawa’s existing target to accept 10,000 refugees.

However, he adds they can get educated about the process and raise money.

He goes on to say they can also press the government for a greater settlement target and a faster process.
