Tanker Sill Aground Off Low Point
A tanker remains grounded near the mouth of Sydney Harbour today after efforts to remove the Arca 1 were unsuccessful, yesterday evening.
The Coast Guard says the salvage contractor couldn’t get enough ballast water from the ship in order to safely move it from the shore off Little Pond.
It adds there were problems with frozen pumps and the tide began to turn.
The Coast Guard goes on to say there will be no effort to move the ship today because of expected weather conditions.
It adds officials will monitor the weather for the next window of opportunity.
Ottawa says the Mexican company that owns the ship is responsible for the costs of removing the tanker.
The Arca 1 was on its way from the Port of Montreal to Mexico when its engine failed on Sunday.
Some industry experts say it should never have been on the high seas because it was designed as a harbour vessel.
