Regional Police Warning Public About Phone Scam
Regional Police are warning people about a scam making the rounds during this income tax season.
They say they’ve had several complaints from people in the past week about callers claiming to be with Revenue Canada phoning them on their home phones and cellphones.
Police add the callers tell the people they reach that they owe money and are either under investigation or about to go to jail if they don’t pay the caller various amount of money.
Regional Police are warning people not to give the callers any personal information that could be used for identity theft, including banking details or Social Insurance Numbers.
They also encourage people who get these calls to ask the caller for the name of their supervisor and a callback number.
They go on to say people who get these calls should tell the caller they’re going to be phoning police before they hang up.
