New Waterford convent damaged in fire

The former Saint Agnes Convent in New Waterford suffered extensive damage in an early-morning blaze this morning.

The fire was reported to the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department just after midnight.

A section of Convent Street was closed to traffic around 2 this morning as firefighters battled the blaze; the street has since reopened.

The old convent was believed to be vacant when the fire broke out. There is no word of any injuries at this point.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
