Separate Trials in Jessome Murder
Two Glace Bay men charged in the murder of a Laura Jessome from Bras d’Or woman will be tried separately.
25 year-old Morgan James MacNeil and 41 year-old Thomas Ted Barrett, were jointly charged with second-degree murder in the case.
However, MacNeil wanted to go to trial on his own rather than wait for Barrett to find a lawyer.
The Crown consented to the request in court yesterday and MacNeil will now stand trial by judge alone, starting on September 15th.
Meanwhile, Barrett told the court yesterday, he’s still waiting to be assigned a legal aid lawyer.
Earlier this year, he was convicted of second degree murder in the death of Brett Elizabeth McKinnon from Glace Bay and sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 15 years.
MacNeil is also behind bars on unrelated offences, including armed robbery.
Barrett is due back in court on Sept. 6 to give an update on his search for a lawyer.
