Regional Councillors Approve Their Own Pay Raise
Regional Councillors approved their own pay raise at last night’s Council meeting.
The salary hike is meant to offset a federal policy change that will see councillors lose the one-third tax exemption on their pay.
The pay increase actually means Mayor Cecil Clarke and councillors will take home the same amount of money, after taxes.
However, the hike in their gross pay will cost the municipality 140-thousand dollars a year.
Councillors also voted to release minutes of in camera meetings where they discussed their pay.
However, they voted down a motion to release audio from the meetings.
Municipal solicitor Demetri Kachafanas told council last night the province is not in favour of municipal councils discussing their own salaries behind closed doors.
