Liberal Government Imposes Wage Package on Provincial Civil Servants
The Liberal government has imposed a wage package on provincial civil servants by proclaiming Bill 148.
The move comes after last ditch talks with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union failed, earlier this month.
The union that represents nearly 8-thousand civil servants has filed for arbitration.
By proclaiming Bill 148, the government makes sure an arbitrator cannot give the NSGEU a wage package that’s higher than the offer presented to all public sector unions.
It includes a three per cent wage increase over four years, beginning with a two-year wage freeze.
Meanwhile, Premier Stephen McNeil says Bill 148 will be referred to the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal under the Constitutional Questions Act to get the court’s opinion on the legislation.
