CBer’s React To Kutcher Report
There’s mixed reaction to yesterday’s report by Dr. Stan Kutcher on youth mental health in Cape Breton, with some parents saying more urgent action is needed.
The province says it’s moving immediately on three of Kutcher’s seven recommendations, but Chris Royal, whose 13 year-old daughter committed suicide in June, says the province needs to take action on all seven recommendations right away.
Royal also notes the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board had cut two guidance counsellors, and he says funding announced yesterday isn’t going to increase the number of counselors in the next school year.
Board Superintendant Beth MacIsaac says they’ve established a committee that includes health professionals and representatives from the board to better align mental health services with the school system.
She adds the board is committed to working with community members and organizations for the betterment of students.
